A guide to eating out at Restaurants

Eating out may be easier than you think.

It’s imperative when you are on a sodium restricted diet that you let your server know. Most restaurants are happy to accommodate special requests.  I find that higher-end restaurants, such as Morton’s and Oceanaire, and large chains are more accommodating. Chains such as The Cheesecake Factory, Longhorn and Texas Roadhouse are always great with this restriction.  Unfortunately, I tend to avoid ethnic restaurants, such as Indian, since many dishes and sauces are prepared beforehand. I also carry my own spices and sauces in small pill-size plastic bags to ensure I have a flavorful meal. Check out my Product Faves page for examples!

I carry a business card with my sodium restriction and hand it to the server, who usually brings it to the chef.  This makes certain there are no misunderstandings and restaurants seem to really appreciate this input! Click below to download a PDF of the front and back of this card.  It’s printer ready. If you need an inexpensive site for printing, VistaPrint is great.

*Did you know that you contact your favorite restaurant and ask if they can make catering-size portions of your favorite dishes with no added salt? You can then divide into individual portions and freeze. I do this with my favorite Indian restaurant. Be sure to be clear on your restrictions. Giving them the card at the top of this page will help.
